Audi will build its first U.S. production site in Georgia, investing around $4 billion and creating approximately 4,500 jobs, the company said in a press release published October 25. The plant, at the Middle Georgia Megasite in Peach County, is designed to produce up to 200,000 premium SUVs a year for North American customers, according to Audi and a separate announcement from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s office.

Key Takeaways

  • Audi will invest around $4 billion in its first U.S. plant, in Georgia, creating approximately 4,500 jobs.
  • The plant is designed for up to 200,000 premium SUVs a year, built for North American customers.
  • Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with production planned to start in the early 2030s.

What changed

Audi currently builds none of the vehicles it sells in the United States inside the country. In its release, the company said local production would make North America a third major pillar of its global production network alongside Europe and China, and would reduce its exposure to trade and currency risks. Chief Executive Gernot Döllner said Audi has “much greater ambitions” in America and has “not yet realized our full potential” in the U.S. market. Production chief Gerd Walker said building from the ground up lets Audi “rethink manufacturing from day one.” Governor Kemp’s office said Audi cited speed-to-market, workforce, access to consumer markets and proximity to an established automotive supply chain in choosing Georgia.

Who it affects

The approximately 4,500 planned jobs are centered on the Middle Georgia Megasite in Peach County, developed with Houston and Macon-Bibb counties. Audi said the investment is also expected to create opportunities for suppliers, service providers and training partners in the region. Georgia Quick Start will work with Audi on customized training curricula and a designated training facility, partnering with local Technical College System of Georgia campuses, according to the governor’s office, which said wages will be competitive and well-paying for the local market but gave no figures. Neither release disclosed state or local incentives.

When it takes effect

Audi said construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with production planned to start in the early 2030s. The governor’s office gave a more detailed sequence: grading in 2027, construction of the facility in 2028 and full production in 2031 at the 200,000-unit annual capacity. The jobs and output are therefore years away, and Audi has not named the specific SUV models the plant will build.
